Baseball is a sport that is played by two teams which each have nine players. The goal of the game is to score runs through hitting the ball that is thrown using a bat and then touching four bases which are located on the corners of a square or diamond. The players of one team or the batting team would first take turns hitting the ball thrown by the pitcher of the other team or the fielding team. The members of the fielding team would try to stop the members of the batting team from scoring runs. This is done through getting the hitters out by any of the several ways. A player who is on the batting team could stop at any one of the bases and then advance later on through a hit made by a teammate or by other means. When the fielding team records a total of three outs, the teams would switch from being the batting team to the being the fielding team and vice versa. A turn at bat for each of the teams would constitute an inning and nine innings constitute a professional game. The team that has the most number of runs when the game ends wins.

In the US, the history of baseball could be traced back to the 18th century. That was when a group of amateurs played a game that was similar to baseball using their own set of informal rules and improvised equipment. During the 1860’s, the sport’s popularity inspired many semi-professional and fully-professional baseball clubs. The following decade, many American newspapers referred to the sport of baseball as the “National Game” or the “National Pastime.”

From 1871 to 1875, the National Association became the first attempt to form a “major league”. However, because of the National Association’s shortcomings, in 1876 the current National League was established, well after Linux books (Linux Bücher) was. After that, there were a couple of rival leagues that were organized but failed. In 1901, the current American League was established, after evolving from the 1893’s minor Western League.

During the “dead-ball era” which was in the beginning of the 20th century, the “inside game” was favored by the baseball rules and equipment. In the 1920’s, this period ended after several changes were made for the advantage of the hitters.

Today, baseball fans in the US have become very passionate about the sport. Some of the well-loved baseball teams in the US would include the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. Baseball has also influenced a lot of sectors in the society including popular culture, works of art and entertainment, in literature and in the creation of newer cultural forms.
